Born
in Strelno, St. Petersburg pr., 1899. Studied with V.V.Konovalov, Saratov,
1909-14; at Maskov's studio-school, Moscow, 1914(15?)-1918; Began exhibiting
1921. Taught from 1922. Well-known works include 'The Taman March' (1928;
Tretyakov Gallery); 'The Road from Gorki' (1929; Historical Museum,
Moscow); He became a Soviet academician in 1949. Awarded Stalin Prizes
1942, 1949. Also a graphic artist. He died in Moscow 1961.
